Why do top athletes play professional poker? If you’ve watched any poker games on television, you’re aware that gifted athletes can often be found on the felt, competing and sometimes even holding their own with poker’s best. Why is that? What attracts top athletes to poker, and why are many of them, like baseball’s Orel Hershiser or hockey’s Greg Mueller, so good at it?
Top Athletes in Poker: Competition

Probably the most critical factor that draws athletes to poker is their spirit of competition. Professional sports are highly competitive. In order to win consistently, you need to have the drive to win all the time. Losing must be unacceptable. We find something similar in poker. Poker may be the most highly competitive game there is. You win by collecting chips from everyone else at the table over and over again. Athletes who no longer have the physical ability to compete at the highest level in their sport often find a satisfaction of their competitive urges at the poker table.

Top Athletes in Poker: Strategy

While most professional athletes do not have a reputation for great intelligence, the fact is, to succeed in sports you generally need to have some measure of strategic thought and tactical ability. You need to be able to anticipate where your opponent will move, so you’ll know where to throw that punch or smash that return. You need to know whether the pitcher is thinking fastball or curveball. Whatever the sport, the most successful players are usually thinking players who can accurately project their opponents’ next moves and counter them. This is exactly the kind of ability needed for successful poker.

Top Athletes in Poker: Endurance

Most athletes need to be in top shape and to be able to push their bodies to the limit for hours at a time. Poker clearly does not require the same level of physical endurance. However, to win a major tournament often requires playing poker for 3,4 or 5 twelve-hour days. This can take its toll, especially when you need to play your best all the time. But playing at their best all the time is what the highest level athletes do.

Brady threw a team record 517 yards and four touchdowns, including a 99-yards to Wes Welker, and the AFC East champion of champions started the season with a win for the eighth consecutive campaign.

Defensive end Jared Odrick picked off a deflected pass to set up a touchdown in Miami and at the end Brady’s NFL-record streak of 358 passes without an interception. Otherwise, Brady and the Patriots picked up where they left off last season when he threw for 36 TDs and his team led the league in scoring.

New England totaled 622 yards, the most in franchise history and the most allowed by Miami.

Brady, who completed 32 of 48 passes, was 11th quarterback to throw for at least 500 yards in a game. Norm Van Brocklin set the record of 554 meters in 1951.

The sealer came with 5:44 left and the Patriots leading 31-17. A goal-line stand stopped in Miami at the 1-foot line, then Brady lined up in the shotgun on first down and threw it into the end zone to Welker, who had fallen behind in his markers near a 30-yard line. Welker caught the pass and sprint up untouchable score the end of the longest play in Patriots history.

Sebastian Janikowski drilled an NFL record tying 63-yard field goal to help lead the Oakland Raiders to a season opening 23-20 victory over the Denver Broncos on Monday night.

Polish powerful Polish kicker booted the long field goal just before halftime as he gave the Raiders a 16-3 lead and was greeted by excited team mates.

His kick sailed just beyond the crossbar to tie the record originally set by Tom Dempsey in 1970 before it was matched by Jason Elam in Denver in 1998.

“I had a dream I broke the record and it was here in Denver,” Janikowski told reporters. “The ball really carries here.”

An 11-year veteran, who played his entire career in Oakland, Janikowski is the all time leading scorer in Raiders franchise history.

He finished with three field goals Monday as the Raiders running back Darren McFadden dashed for 150 yards to a win in their first year head coach Hue Jackson.

The Chicago Bears have no intention of being overlooked in the NFC this season.

Brian Urlacher had an interception and returned a fumble for a touchdown, Jay Cutler threw for 312 yards and two scores and the Bears pounded Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons 30-12.

“Big for us,” receiver Roy Williams said. “Big confidence booster for us as a football team. We knew what we can do offensively. We knew what we can do defensively. But to put it together, especially against a good football team in Atlanta, shows what kind of football team we have.”

“Disappointed, not discouraged,” Atlanta coach Mike Smith said. “It’s a long season, it’s Week 1. We will work to get this fixed and we will get it fixed.”

A Lunging Urlacher picked off Ryan’s pass to set up an early 56-yard touchdown catch and run by Matt Forte. In the third quarter, the linebacker picked up a fumble by Ryan and scored from 12 yards to make it 30-6.

The fumble came on one of two sacks by Julius Peppers. Henry Melton also had two sacks and five bears for the day.

Cutler completed 22 of 32 passes and intercepted once in his first game at Soldier Field as the Bears defeated the Green Bay NFC championship. He left the game with a knee injury and has been harshly criticized.

He was sacked five times Sunday, but had a 107.8 quarterback rating as the defending NFC North champions passed a big test.

The schedule is not get easier with games against two former winners of the Super Bowl coming to New Orleans next week and then Green Bay at home, but Chicago was certainly very strong in this one.

“It’s a good start,” Urlacher said. “We’ve got a ways to go. We made some mistakes, me included. Our offense played great today. I know they’re going to say they didn’t do this and that, but they kept us on the sideline for the most part.”

Forte, seeking a contract extension, a screenshot in a short period of time in the first quarter TD and caught five passes for 90 yards at all. It also carried 16 times for 68 yards.

Devin Hester had three catches for 60 yards. He turned a swing pass into a 53-yard gain got stopped just before the goal line, setting up a 1-yard TD catch by Matt Spaeth put the Bears ahead 23-6 midway through the third quarter. Urlacher to put away the game for his fumble return.

Williams caught four passes for 55 yards in his Bears debut before leaving with a groin injury in the fourth quarter.

“We still have to play up to the defense’s level,” Cutler said. “They’re still carrying us.”

Ryan completed 31 of 47 for 319 yards from the Atlanta, but he also had two costly turnovers.

Michael Turner ran for 100 yards, including a 53 yarder, but the defending NFC South champions never established any kind of rhythm.

It certainly was not the kind of performance they had in mind, coming off a 13-win season that ended with a loss of blowing the Packers in the playoffs.

On the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks, there was a great 9 / 11 tapes in the 25-yard line. The coin used for the pregame toss had the same ribbon on one side with a Bears “C” on the other.

There was a video narrated by Robert De Niro, a live simulcast of the trumpet player performing “Taps” in Shanksville, Pa., and a moment of silence. A loud “USA! USA!” chant broke the flag reaches the finish line and finish line was unfurled.

Urlacher said he was surprised Ryan threw that pass.

Ryan said he should throw it away, and clumsiness, not just protect the ball.

“Brian made a good play, full extension,” he said. “He made a nice catch. I probably shouldn’t have thrown it there. I definitely shouldn’t have thrown it there. But that’s one of those situations where you need to throw the football away. You have to make a good decision and get the ball out of your hands with somebody in your face. Just a poor decision there, and on the fumble, you just got to protect the football better in the pocket, that’s as simple as it is.”

The Detroit Lions have picked up where they left off last year and confidence with each victory.

A season-opening 27-20 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, they were already out of their best start since 2007, although coach Jim Schwartz said it is important to keep a turnaround that began in December in perspective.

The Lions have won five consecutive regular-season matches. Throw a perfect preseason game this summer, and have won the last nine times they’ve taken the field.

“I think that we will leave it right where it is. We won our first game of the season,” Schwartz said. “Preseason doesn’t count for anything. … Last year was obviously last year. We have a long way to go, there’s a lot of improvement we can make as a football team. We’re not going to worry about that or anything else. What we need to worry about is playing the best we can play.”

Matthew Stafford threw for 305 yards and three touchdowns and was not sacked, showing what he could mean to Detroit’s chances of ending a decade of futility and making the playoffs if he’s healthy.

The improved Lions pressure defense Bucs quarterback Josh Freeman, held racing game Tampa Bay in check, and did not allow an offensive touchdown until there were less than two minutes left.

Even more encouraging, with Detroit winning despite listening to Stafford returned to the touchdown, special teams allowing a long kickoff return that set up a field goal and several costly penalties, including unsportsmanslike to run games that stopped the clock and gave Freeman ‘s opportunity to conduct a potential game-tying drive at the end.

“I don’t want to discount the value of a win, particularly a win on the road, but we’ve got to play a lot better than we played today,” Schwartz said. “We had way too many mistakes that kept Tampa in this game. I guess a sign of a good team is you can have those mistakes and still come out with a win. But we did some things that are inexcusable and they will not continue.”

Stafford, 24 completed of 33 passes, including TD throws 1 and 36 yards to Calvin Johnson and 11 yards to Tony Scheffler. The interception he threw glanced off the hands of the receiver and will Heller and was returned 28 yards by Aqib Talib for the lone touchdown Tampa Bay managed until Freeman threw a 5-yard scoring pass to Mike Williams 1:35 remaining.

Lions, who have not completed a winning record since 2000, has now lost four starts in 2010. Stafford was injured in the opening 13 and went on Miss team in the remaining 15 games.

Stafford, who missed 19 games over the last two seasons because of injuries, led four scoring drives of 70 yards against a defense that was on his heels most of the day. Lions outgained the Bucs 147 yards to 4 in the first quarter and finished with a 431-313 advantage in total offense.

Johnson had six receptions for 88 yards. His 36-yard TD reception came on a perfectly thrown ball on fourth-and 2, and 6-foot-5-receiver reached above Talib to make an acrobatic grab an acrobatic of a cast for a LOB-Detroit 27 yards to put -13 in the third quarter.

“We have so much confidence in him,” Johnson said of Stafford. “He puts it up there for me, I’ve got to go get it. He’s our coach on the field.”

Freeman, selected 16 spots behind No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 draft, was 28 of 43 for 245 yards. He was intercepted once and sacked twice.

“It’s really frustrating because we felt like, for sure going into it, it was a winnable game. … We just have to find a way to score points earlier,” said Freeman, whose growth a year ago during his first season as a starter keyed a surprising 10-6 finish that nearly produced a playoff berth.

“You hate to start the season out 0-1, but it’s the first game of the year,” Freeman added. “It’s not going to make or break anybody.”

With plenty of salary-cap space at hand, the Bengals struck before the start of the series to keep three key players – CB Leon Hall, OLT Andrew Whitworth and C Kyle Cook – in the fold for the next few years, signing any new contract until 2015.

The re-signings follow a blueprint Cincinnati has followed in recent years. The Bengals have been reprimanded for their unwillingness to spend at times, but they have been willing to re-sign their best players to contract extensions. Perhaps more specifically, to aggressively to sign quarterback Carson Palmer to a new agreement in 2014 at the end of ’05 season – just his second as a starter, and when Palmer had three years remaining on his rookie contract.

On the wrong side of the ledger, the Bengals have made some missteps rather expensive when you adding free agents from other clubs in free agency, such as the signings of WRs Antonio Bryant and Laveranues Coles. Also, losing CB Johnathan Joseph to Houston in July was about the Bengals should not be a talented player in his first.

However, the Bengals did move decisively to keep the Hall, their upper back and the player who decided to use a great interest in free agency when his original contract expired after this season. Hall will receive $19.137 million by next March, his agent, Doug Hendrickson, said PFW, and the contract pays him $ 21.5 million for the entire period in 2012.

Hendrickson said it took an “elite-level” contract for Hall, not to test free agency after the season.

“They came out really strong right away,” Hendrickson said of the Bengals’ commitment to striking a deal.

Another factor that worked an agreement: Hall likes Cincinnati, Hendrickson said. Cook, expected to receive $ 14 million in new money in his four-year deal, according to agent Alan Herman, badly wanted to stay with Bengals and OL coach Paul Alexander and passed on a chance to try free agency after the season.

“He’s happy to extend his time in Cincinnati,” said Herman.

Cook and Whitworth, who played very well last season, bring stability to a line with the potential to improve, but still a work in progress. Hall, in his case started 56 consecutive games.

Now we here, he’s extremely motivated to go out and show your team – or another, if the Eagles are not willing to pay – that he is worth front-line playmaker cash.

There were times last season, especially early, when Jackson appeared to be elite in that department by calling one after another long touchdown.

The Eagles should be pleased that Jackson turned the situation into a positive and not being petulant.

They know they are rolling the dice with Jackson as their primary punt returner, but it’s what he apparently wants he apparently wants and he’s by far their best option there. But Jackson also has its critics as a receiver.

He caught only one pass TD pass in his last seven games last season and was quiet in the preseason with two receptions.

What made from a base game to game will be a long way toward determining the value of his next contract.

Aaron Rodgers threw three touchdowns in the first quarter as the Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers opened the new NFL season an exciting 42-34 win over the New Orleans Saints on Thursday.

If a bitter labor dispute that had threatened to disrupt the season left fans with a sour taste, compensation came in the form of a mouth-watering opener pitting the last two Super Bowl winners at one of the sport’s iconic venues, Lambeau Field.

Any lingering hard feelings faded right after the kickoff and were long forgotten by the time Saints Packers stopped the Saints on the one-yard line with no time to get a win breathtaking.

The Packers and the Saints gave exactly the kind of entertaining contest that has become the most popular sport as Rodgers and the Saints quarterback Drew Brees, the most valuable players in the last two Super Bowls, each has launched three touchdown passes and combined for over 700 passing yards.

Green Bay Rookie Randall Cobb electrified the capacity crowd with an NFL record-equaling 108-yard kickoff return while the Saints Speedster Darren Sproles returned punt 72 yards for another score for a perfect late summer night for football.

“I thought Aaron was outstanding,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy told reporters. “Aaron commands the offense.

“He had a big night and that’s way Aaron plays. He has set that standard and he’s off to a great start.”

After a day of tailgating, the kickoff celebrations moved inside the Lambeau Field and the Packers kept the party going, a red-hot Rodgers tossing three touchdowns in the first quarter for a 21-7 lead.

The Packers quarterback was in sizzling form completing 14-of-15 passes, including touchdown to Greg Jennings (seven meters), Jordy Nelson (three meters) and Cobb (32 yards).

“I’ve just got to ask myself, what would have happened if we had off-season workouts?” said Rodgers, who joins Jack Kemp (1964) as the only quarterbacks to throw three touchdowns in the first quarter.

“Could we have started any faster and scored more points tonight.”

Brees also showed his Super Bowl MVP credentials finding newcomer Sproles with a 36-yard pass then compress a laser 31 yards to a leaping Robert Meachem jump to cap a quick fire six play 80 yard scoring drive.

The Saints were on the March, again in the second quarter, John Kasay 30-yard field goal before Sproles sent a jolt through the crowd with his electrify punt return that sliced the Green Bay advantage to 21-17.

But Packers meet with James Starks way to fuel their 17-yard touchdown for 28-17 lead going into the half.

New Orleans continued to chip away at the Packers lead with Kasay connecting on a 38-yard field goal to open the scoring in the second half, but the Packers hit back style, as Cobb got underway, and woven their way into the NFL record books.

“I’m not suppose to bring that out,” said Cobb. “I was just doing anything I could to contribute and I was trying to make the most of opportunities.”

The Saints refused to buckle, Brees hooking up with Devery Henderson for a 29-yard touchdown to close to within 35-27

Green Bay opened the fourth quarter with another touchdown drive John Kuhn Bulling his way into one.

Once again, the Saints did not wave a white flag, Brees to finding Jimmy Graham with five-yard touchdown on the stage moves in an unexpected nail-biting finish.

“You have to get a yard, it’s on the goal line to win the game,” said Ingram, who was making his NFL debut. “I have to get a yard.”

The Denver Broncos expect a lot of screens and draws to counter the speed they’ll bring off the edge of the pass-rushers Elvis Dumervil and Von Miller this season.

Dumervil is one of the best defensive display to recognizing the screen, standing up to swat passes or off the lane and pushing the tackle back into the pocket whenever offenses try to counter his speed with screens.

That’s one thing Miller, the second overall draft pick, will have to learn to rule the Big 12 in the NFL.

“The thing that I tell him, `When it’s too easy, they’re opening the door to let you get upfield, then something’s up,”’ defensive line coach Wayne Nunnely said Thursday after Denver’s defense worked extensively during practice on defending the screen.

With Dumervil so adept at deciphering the screen passes, opponents will certainly test the rookie from Texas A & M.

“So, when he sees that it’s too easy, he’s just got to put on the brakes and work back to the line of scrimmage and find the ball,” said Nunnely.

Miller has an outstanding first step, but there is a steep learning curve in the pros for an outside linebacker whose primary job is rushing the passer.

“I think every day he’s getting a little bit better,” defensive coordinator Dennis Allen said. “It just comes with work. It comes with seeing it and seeing it and seeing it, and he’s continued to get better, and as long as he keeps working, he’s going to be just fine.”

“It’s a process,” Dumervil said. “He’s a rookie still. I think he’s way ahead of the curve, but he’s still a rookie, there’s a lot of things he has to learn. But as long as he’s playing at his best, full speed, we can react to the other things.”

Nunnely said it will be imperative for the interior linemen—Kevin Vickerson and Brodrick Bunkley—to recognize the screen and adjust.

“Teams are going to try to slow us down,” Vickerson said. “We’re going to have pressure coming off the edge. With that being said, the middle has to be controlled and that’s me and Bunkley and the tackles that are coming in.”

It will also be essential for strong safety Brian Dawkins and the weakside linebacker Wesley Woodyard, who’s filling in for an injured D.J Williams, a loop and connect the streets to stop the higher dose of the screens of the Broncos are sure to see .

“With the speed that we have on the edge, that’s something we have to look for: screens and draws,” Woodyard said. “That’s going to be a big alert with any team that we face this year with the speed and pass rush that we have this year.”

Woodyard said he knew the moment Miller was writing that the Broncos would get a steady diet of trickery in 2011 as teams try to “gimmicks to slow our pass rush down and try to get people to think instead of just playing football.”

If the Broncos can slow down the Oakland Raiders’ run game Monday night at home, then be able to let loose Miller and Dumervil to rush the passer, inviting some of these screens and transfers delayed if fourth Jason Campbell can get the ball with his hands before the “Orange Rush” gets to him.

“I think when you can have two guys coming off opposite edges, it’s hard for the offense to stop both of them,” Allen said. “They’ve got to keep a tight end in, or chip on one side or the other, but when you’ve got rushers on both sides, it makes it hard on the offense. It limits some of the things they can do, so we’re excited about that.

“But again, listen, we’re not going to get a chance to rush the passer if we don’t stop the run. So that’s the first thing we’ve got to get done.”

One thing that should help the Broncos pass rushers get to get their man is moving out of the corner Champ Bailey on the inside to cover the slot receiver in the pass.

“When you look at third down, a lot of teams are working inside and trying to work the slot receiver,” Allen said, “and we put our best guy in there.”

Tom Brady was on the sideline by the time the New England Patriots ended his 31 points in the destruction of the Miami Dolphins in Week 17 last season, the eighth straight victory in a streak that had them firmly entrenched as the NFL’s team to beat heading into the playoffs.

Little did they know they wouldn’t win again.

A second straight early exit from the postseason prompted the Patriots to add some high-profile veterans, moves they hope can help speed their ascent back to the NFL dominance begins Monday night in the game of the season in Miami.

For much of 2010, the 14-2 Patriots seemed to be doing his best impression of the 2007 club that won his first 18 games before ultimately coming up short in Super Bowl XLII.

The 38-7 victory over the Dolphins in the regular season last week capped an 8-0 second half in which New England averaged 37.4 points, and only once in five post-November games did it allow more than a touchdown.

That gave the Patriots home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs, and made them the overwhelming favorite for the fifth Super Bowl Bill of the Bill Belichick era, but instead, they fizzled out early. Brady and the Patriots unusual sloppy in loss, Jets 28-21 divisions, the same team were beaten 45-3 six weeks earlier.

After winning 11 straight home playoff games since the previous defeat in 1978, New England has lost the postseason Opener in Foxborough in the back-to-Back Seasons.

“You realize how tough it is to win games over the years,” Brady told the Patriots’ official website. “And I think that when you’re out there as a veteran player and you provide the leadership for the team because you’ve been experienced – I’ve been experienced in this program – we’re hoping to go out there every year and put together a winning season. It’s frustrating when we don’t do that.”

“It’s a dangerous group,” Brady said. “They’re experienced in the secondary. They’ve been playing together now for a little while and they’re very good, especially when the pass rush gets going.”

Despite these names, the Dolphins produced a franchise-low 19 turnovers in 2010. New England, meanwhile, gave the ball an incredible 10 times – at least a 16-game season in NFL history.

“Teams playing deep into January are teams whose turnover ratio is pretty good,” Miami coach Tony Sparano said.

There is little room to go but up. The Dolphins averaged 3.7 yards per carry and 17.1 points last season, both 30th in the league. They also lost three times by three points or fewer – all at home, where they were a dreadful 1-7.

“If you win some of the close games, we’re not having this conversation,” receiver Brian Hartline said. “But we didn’t. There are things we need to fix. We’re fixing them. And we’re going to be a better team.”
